A process for the production of pentafluoroethane which comprises the steps (i) producing a composition comprising a compound of formula C2HClxFy in which x = 1, 2 or 3 and y = 2, 3 or 4 provided that x + y is 5, contaminated with a compound of formula C2Clx+1Fy, (ii) separating the compound of formula C2HClxFy from the compound of formula C2Clx+1Fy and (iii) contacting the compound of formula C2HClxFy with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a fluorination catalyst whereby to produce pentafluoroethane.

L'invention concerne un procédé de production de pentafluoroéthane qui consiste (i) à produire une composition comprenant un composé de formule C¿2?HCl¿x?F¿y? dans laquelle x = 1, 2 ou 3 et y = 2, 3 ou 4 à la condition que x + y égalent 5, ce composé étant contaminé par un composé de formule C¿2?Cl¿x+1?F¿y?, (ii) à séparer le composé de formule C¿2?HCl¿x?F¿y? du composé de formule C¿2?Cl¿x+1?F¿y?, et enfin (iii) à mettre le composé de formule C¿2?HCl¿x?F¿y? en contact avec du fluorure d'hydrogène en présence d'un catalyseur de fluoration afin de produire du pentafluoroéthane.
