ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is concerned with a process for producing a mixture containing phthalide ,which com- prises subjecting o-toluic acid to chlorination in the side chain, said chlorination being carried out at a tem- perature from 30°C to 260°C, in the molten phase or in an inert solvent, and under ultra violet radiation or in the presence of a radical initiator. The invention enables one to produce phthalide from cheep, commonly available chemicals in a reasonable purity and yield.
