Process for the production of an aqueous polymer emulsion which process comprises; a) preparing a low molecular weight polymer containing acid-functional groups using a free-radical polymerisation process which employs a free-radical initiator and, for the purpose of controlling molecular weight, a transition metal chelate complex, wherein said low molecular weight polymer has a number average molecular weight within the range of from 500 to 50,000; b) conducting an aqueous emulsion polymerisation process to form an aqueous emulsion of a hydrophobic polymer from at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer, wherein the low molecular weight polymer of step a) is introduced to the aqueous medium of said emulsion polymerisation process before the start of and/or during said emulsion polymerisation process and becomes dissolved or dispersed in said aqueous medium.

Un procédé de production d'une émulsion aqueuse de polymères consiste: a) à préparer un polymère à faible masse moléculaire, contenant des groupes à fonction acide, en utilisant un procédé de polymérisation à radicaux libres employant un initiateur à radicaux libres et, pour maîtriser la masse moléculaire, un complexe de chélates de métaux de transition, ledit polymère à faible masse moléculaire présentant une masse moléculaire moyenne au nombre allant de 500 à 50 000; b) à procéder à la polymérisation d'une émulsion aqueuse pour former une émulsion aqueuse d'un polymère hydrophobe à partir d'au moins un monomère insaturé en oléfine, étape où on introduit le polymère à faible masse moléculaire de l'étape a) dans le milieu aqueux dudit procédé de polymèrisation d'émulsion, avant le démarrage du processus de polymérisation et/ou tandis qu'il se déroule, ce polymère se dissolvant ou se dispersant alors dans ledit milieu aqueux.
