ABSTRACT Crosslinked addition polymer microparticles are produced by dispersion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in aliphatic hydrocarbon liquid, in the presence of a specified dispersion stabiliser, at least one of the monomers containing a hydroxymethylamino or alkoxymethylamino group and at least one other of the monomers containing a functional group, such as hydroxyl or carboxyl group, which is capable of reacting with the aforesaid group under the polymerisation conditions. The microparticles may be incorporated into coating compositions, preferably in association with an auxiliary polymer which is soluble in the liquid diluent of the composition and is compatible with the film-forming polymer thereof, with resulting improvement in the application characteristics of the composition.
