The invention concerns the preparation of polycarboxylic acids or their salts by the oxidation of polysaccharides using nitrogen dioxide/dinitrogen tetroxide convert at least some of the primary-alcohol groups of the polysaccharide into carboxyl groups plus, optionally, at least partial neutralization of the carboxylic-acid groups thus formed. The oxidation reaction is carried out as a continuous procedure at a temperature above 80 °C in the presence or absence of oxygen, and the length of time the reaction mixture spends in the reaction zone is set at 1 to 30 min.

Des acides polycarboxyliques ou leurs sels sont préparés à partir de polysaccharides par oxydation avec du dioxyde d'azote ou du tétroxyde d'azote avec transformation d'au moins une partie des groupes d'alcools primaires des polysaccharides en groupes carboxyle et le cas échéant avec une neutralisation au moins proportionnelle des groupes carboxyliques produits. On effectue la réaction d'oxydation dans un processus continu sous une température supérieure à 80 DEG C en présence ou non d'oxygène et on règle un temps de séjour du mélange réactionnel dans la zone de réaction de 1 à 30 mn.
