PRODUCTION OF SPONGY CERAMIC MATERIAL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Spongy ceramic material supporting exhaust gas decontamination catalysts is produced. Loosely aggre- gated polystyrene spheroids are joined together across their contact surface to a spheroskeleton having hollow spaces which are filled with an aqueous suspension of ceramic material. More particularly, use is made of hollow foamed polystyrene spheroids which are connect- ed together to a sphero-skeleton by plasticizing their surface areas. The hollow spaces inside the spheroske- leton are filled with the aqueous suspension of cera- mic material and the skeleton is dried at 20 - 95°C. The dry material is freed from the polystyrene spheroids and the ceramic skeleton is calcined at 1000- 1500°C.
