Pour stabiliser et désodoriser un polysulfure organique brut, on le traite par un carbonate d'alkylène en présence d'un catalyseur basique et, éventuellement d'un donneur de soufre. Ce procédé qui permet de réduire le taux de mercaptan résiduel, est rapide, utilise des réactifs peu toxiques et ne nécessite pas le recours à un solvant ou à un mélange de phase, ni à une distillation.
