A s S T R A C T To prevent the formation of a sludge in crude wet process phosphoric acid containing 22 to 35 weight percent of P205, the invention consists of a process comprising (1) removing at least 85%, by volume, of the suspended solids present in the starting acid, (2) adding 0.05 to 2.0 weight percent of particles of an aluminium silicate, preferably perlite, based on the weight of P205 in the acid, (3) concentrating the resulting mixture, with the aid of heat, to dissolve the aluminium silicate, preferably to from 42 to 52 weight percent P205, (4) crystallizing the concentrated solution to cause precipitation of solids, and (5) separating from the precipitated solids a supernatant liquid phosphoric acid substantially free from said solids. A supplementary Disclosure discloses the embodiment of pre-concentrating the acid to a P205 content of more than 35 and up to 46% by weight at any time before step (2).
