ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Pure, reactive basic zirconium carbonate which is stable and soluble in organic acids for commercial usage in the manufacture of zirconium chemicals is produced by reaction of a soluble zirconium salt in acid solution in the presence of sulfate ion with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate; the reactive basic zirconium carbonate is produced in a single stage process via a polymeric zirconium sulphate intermediate; in particular the process avoids formation of the zirconium carbonate as a gelatinous mass which is difficult to filter.
