A process for the production of a metal which comprises: carbothermal reduction of the corresponding metal oxide to produce a mixed gas stream comprising the metal and carbon monoxide; maintaining the mixed gas stream at a suitably elevat-ed temperature to prevent reformation of the metal oxide; ejecting the mixed gas stream through a convergent-divergent nozzle in order to cool the mixed gas stream instantaneously to a temperature at which reformation of the metal oxide cannot take place; and separating and collecting the metal, wherein the nozzle is heated by means other than gas flow through the nozzle so that tempera-ture of surfaces of the nozzle in contact with the mixed gas stream are maintained at a temperature sufficient to prevent deposition on the said surfaces of products from the gas stream.
Procédé de production dun métal, comprenant : la réduction carbothermique de loxyde métallique correspondant pour produire un flux gazeux mixte comprenant le métal et du monoxyde de carbone ; le maintien du flux gazeux mixte à une température suffisamment élevée pour empêcher la reformation de loxyde métallique ; lexpulsion du flux gazeux mixte à travers une tuyère de Laval pour refroidir instantanément le flux gazeux mixte à une température à laquelle la reformation de loxyde métallique ne peut pas avoir lieu ; et la séparation du métal suivie de son prélèvement. Ladite tuyère est chauffée par des moyens autres que le flux gazeux traversant la tuyère de manière à ce que la température des surfaces de la tuyère qui sont en contact avec le flux gazeux mixte soit maintenue à une température suffisant à empêcher le dépôt de produits issus du flux gazeux sur lesdites surfaces.
