ABSTRACT The invention has a metal tube of any desired length made from one thermocouple element material. A travelling arm terminating in spring contacts moves axially through the length of the tube, and is made from the other thermocouple element material, thereby creating a thermocouple junction. Electrical connections from the tube and travelling arm complete the thermocouple circuit and thus provide the temperature at a meter or chart recorder. The travelling arm can be marked and a suitable pointer used to provide an indication of the location of the spring contacts and thus thermocouple junction. A motor can be used to produce the travel of the travelling arm. The motor may be controlled and tied in with the chart recorder to provide an automated temperature profile, or the system may be operated manually, pausing to take readings at different locations as desired. In an alternative embodiment, instead of a rigid travelling arm, the spring contacts are carried on a flexible wire, the wire acting as one of the thermocouple elements, and being made of a suitable material accordingly. Instead of a straight tube, a U-shaped tube is used. The wire runs in a continuous loop around a pulley sealed into the unit at the bottom of the U-shape, and a reversible synchronized motor positioned outside the unit. The motor can be used to drive the wire so that the spring contacts move up and down one side of the U-shape, thereby providing the profiling.
