A self-contained unit with a card receiving slot, card reader, memory and logic and control circuitry in a single small package, An access control device providing a unique number for each issued card and including a program- mable memory providing storage for the code of each card permitted access and of each card the permission of which is subsequently voided. An access control device of a size suitable for positioning at the location where access is being controlled and having a capability of several thousand different card codes, without requiring a central station or wiring interconnections between devices or between the device and a central station.
