The L4 application in the switch is expanded to permit functions previously performed exclu-sively in the L5 protocol application. Moreover, the L4 application is programmable by the system operator so that the system operator may expand the predefined set of L4 call management opera-tions to accommodate his call processing require-ments. Overall supervision of the call-management operations was previously limited to the L5 applications. However, the ability to program the L4 application enables the system operator to decide which call processing operations will be managed by the L5 applications and which operations will be managed by the L4 application. The system opera-tor may thus define, in the L4 application, a propri-etary call model that instructs the switching node to manage all incoming calls, or the system operator may specify the call model on a channel by channel basis. The latter arrangement programs the switch-ing node to use different call-processing protocols among the various channels. In addition, the user may either re-define or define entirely new appli-cation programming interface (API) calls for com-munications between the host and switching node and/or between the switching node and ports.

De plus, l'application L4 est programmable par l'opérateur de système, si bien que ce dernier peut élargir le groupe prédéfini d'opérations de gestion d'appel L4 pour l'adapter à ses besoins de traitement d'appels. La surveillance générale des opérations de gestion d'appels était précédemment limitée aux applications L5. Toutefois, la capacité de programmer l'application L4 permet à l'opérateur de système de décider quelles opérations de traitement d'appels seront gérées par les applications L5 et quelles opérations seront gérées par les applications L4. L'opérateur de système doit donc définir, dans l'application L4, un modèle d'appel prioritaire, qui donne l'instruction au noeud de commutation de gérer tous les appels entrants, ou bien l'opérateur de système peut spécifier le modèle d'appel sur une base canal par canal. Dans cette dernière configuration, le noeud de commutation est programmé pour utiliser différents protocoles de traitement d'appel parmi les différents canaux. De plus, l'utilisateur peut soit redéfinir ou définir entièrement de nouveaux appels d'interface de programmation d'applications (API) pour les communications entre l'ordinateur central et le noeud de commutation et/ou entre le noeud de commutation et les ports d'accès.
