-95- Abstract A process is disclosed for coal liquification, hydrogenation and cracking by contacting a cracking catalsyt bearing at least about 1500 nickel equivalents of heavy metals with a charge stock comprising slurried and/or dissolved coal in a progressive flow reactor, such as a riser. The conditions of contact are such that hydrogen is formed in the reaction stream, such as by dehydrogenation of the oil in the presence of the high metals containing catalyst. Optionally, a hydrogen donor material may be present in the reaction zone so as to yield mobile hydrogen in the absence of added molecular hydrogen. The reaction stream has a lineal velocity of at least 25 feed per second, the vapor residence time is up to about 10 seconds, the temperature is in the range of about 900 to about 1400°F, the pressure is in the range of about 50 lbs. per square inch absolute, and the volume percent conversion is at least about 50% per pass.
