A projection cathode-ray tube comprising a transparent protective layer interposed between a face panel and an optical multilayered interference film. In order to prevent a browning discoloration occurring on the glass surface of the face panel caused by a direct chemical reaction between the glass surface and the optical multilayered interference filter due to an electron bombardment, there is disposed the transparent protective layer, made from inorganic materials, between the face plate and the optical multilayered interference filter. The transparent protective layer consists of silicon dioxide (SiO2) or aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and has a thickness of 0.05 micrometer or less or 0.5 micrometer or more, respectively.
