In a projection display device, emergent light from an illumination optical system is diffused by microlenses provided in a liquid crystal light valve. Emergent light from the liquid crystal light valve diffused by these microlenses is efficiently drawn into a projection optical system whose f-number is set to be less than the f-number of the illumination optical system. As a result, it is possible to prevent light utilization efficiency from being deteriorated due to light diffusion by the microlenses. Consequently, it is possible to obtain a bright projection image in a projection display device in which a liquid crystal light valve having microlenses is incorporated.

La lumière émise, diffusée par la micro-lentille (101) depuis l'ampoule (100R), est reçue avec un bon rendement dans un système de projection optique (60) ayant un nombre d'ouverture F plus petit que celui du système optique d'éclairage (80). On évite ainsi une diminution du coefficient d'utilisation de la lumière attribué à la diffusion par la micro-lentille (101), et l'afficheur à projection comportant l'ampoule à cristaux liquides avec la micro-lentille donne une image projetée lumineuse.
