A projection television provided with a wavelength-selection-type rear projection screen, the transmittance of which is relatively large when the wavelength of incident light is equal to or longer than a predetermined value, but the transmittance of which is relatively small when the wavelength of incident light is shorter than the predetermined value. Moreover, the projection television most effectively utilizes power of each CRT by increasing the beam current of each of the red and green cathode ray tubes. With such a screen of which the transmittance is relatively high when incident light is blue light, but the transmittance of which is relatively low when the incident light is red or green light, the magnitude of the beam current of each of the red and green cathode ray tubes, of which the efficiency in emitting light is relatively large, can be increased. Thus, contrast measured under presence of external light irradiated on the screen can be increased without decreasing luminance.
