ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Beam sensing elements are located in a predetermined positional relationship with horizontally spaced color phosphor strips in a television screen. Impingement of an electron beam upon the sensing elements produces an index signal representing the nonlinearity which may be present in the horizontal deflection waveform, the index signal being stored in a storage medium until the next raster scan and retrieved repeatedly at the start of each line scan. The retrieved index signal is modulated in frequency with a signal representing the time it takes for the electron beam to traverse a single horizontal line to compensate for pincushin distortion. The frequency modulated index signal is phase shifted to generate sampling signals for the primary color signals generating a dot-sequential video signal which is used to modulate the intensity of a first electron beam. A second electron beam is successively modulated in intensity and caused to impinge substantially on the same spot where the first electron beam has previously impinged. A pair of horizontally spaced apart deflection plates is provided adjacent the electron beam sources to oscillate the electron beams in a direction parallel to the horizontal scan lines to increase the dwell time of the impinging electrons on a given beam spot to thereby increase its brightness.
