ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A prolonged release drug dosage form for the treatment of bovine mastitis, specifically suited for dry cow treatment, consists of an antimicrobial agent dispersed in a matrix of a low molecular weight polyester of glycolic and lactic acids, and shaped as a cylindrical bougie for facile insertion into the teat canal. Said polyester erodes by hydrolysis in the bioenvironment, providing a continuous release of the medication throughout the desired durationof the treatment. The low molecular weight polyesters have a glycolic acid content of about 60 to 80 mole percent, a lactic acid content of about 20 to 40 mole percent, and a molecular weight less than 2000.
