ABSTRACT A promotional system requiring customer interaction for the determination of promotional prizes includes a scanning and validating device and a coded substrate wherein the device includes a slot for insertion of at least a part of the coded substrate on which coded information is contained, means for positioning the coded substrate, means for scanning the coded information, a microcomputer for determining whether the coded substrate is valid and a prize is to be awarded based on the coded information on the coded substrate and means for marking the coded substrate with information on the prize awarded.
