A "Karaoke" entertainment system, which permits performers to sing along with a prerecorded musical accompaniment, comprises a tape player, an amplifier unit and a prompting device. The tape player plays tapes prerecorded with an audio accompaniment and a synchronous prompt signal, the latter for generating characters for display as a prompt. The amplifier unit demodulates the prompt signal to provide a character generation signal and supplies it to the promptingdevice. Also, it mixes the audio accompaniment with the voice signal from the performer's microphone, amplifies the combined signal and supplies it to a loudspeaker. The prompting device, which mounts upon the conventional stick microphone, comprises a controller, a port for receiving a character generation signal, a memory and a display unit. The controller buffers the character generation signal in memory and then transfer it to the display to display lines of text which scroll across the display in synchronism with the musical accompaniment signal. A "Karaoke" amplifier unit for use with the prompting device may have a demodulator for extracting a clock signal and strobe signal from the prerecorded prompt signal and supplying them, with the character generation signal, to the prompting device by way of a serial interface. The prompting device can be used independently, in which case the prompt signal may be loaded into the memory before a performance and transferred to the display during the performance, the scroll rate being controlled by the performer using pushbutton switches.
