ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel propionamidine derivatives of the formula: Image (I) wherein X is halogen, are disclosed, as well as a process for their preparation. The process involves reacting a 3-halopropionitrile of the formula: Image (III) wherein X is as defined above, with sulfamide of the formula: Image (II) in the presence of a hydrogen halide. The compounds of formula (I) are useful intermediates in the preparation of famotidine.
