The present invention discloses that, propionic acid or salt thereof, is an effective pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide. Propionic acid biodegrades first to acetic and formic acids and then to carbon dioxide and water thus posing not threat the environment. Propionic acid is less caustic and corrosive than formic acid, and with proper formulation and the use of respiratory protection, it poses no threat to the applicator. Propionic acid is demonstrated in this invention to control both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants.

L'acide propionique, ou son sel, est selon l'invention un herbicide pré-émergent et post-émergent efficace. L'acide propionique se biodégrade d'abord en acides acétique et formique, puis en dioxyde de carbone et eau, ne représentant par conséquent aucune menace pour l'environnement. L'acide propionique est moins caustique et corrosif que l'acide formique, et moyennant une formulation correcte et le port d'une protection respiratoire, il ne présente aucun risque pour la personne qui l'applique. Il est démontré dans cette invention que l'acide propionique est utile dans la lutte à la fois contre les monocotylédones et les dicotylédones.
