The invention is a propulsion system for a lighter-than-air vehicle (10). In detail the propulsion system includes a pylon (40) having a longitudinal axis and first and second ends (42, 44), the first end (42) of the pylon (40) rotatably mounted to the vehicle (10) and the second end (44) extending outward from the vehicle. The pylon (40) is rotatable about the first end (42) in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (12) of the vehicle. A thrust producing assembly (26) is mounted on the second end (44) of the pylon (40) and is rotatable about an axis of rotation in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pylon (40). A powerplant assembly (32A, 32B) is coupled to the thrust producing assemblies (26) to provide power thereto. An actuation system (74) is provided for rotating the assembly (26) about the axis of rotation. A second actuation system (60) is provided for rotating the pylon (40) about the first end (42).

Ce système de propulsion est destiné à un véhicule (10) plus léger que l'air. Dans le détail, ce système de propulsion se compose d'un pylône (40) ayant un axe longitudinal ainsi qu'une première extrémité (42) et une seconde extrémité (44). La première extrémité (42) du pylône (40) est montée rotative sur le véhicule (10) et la seconde extrémité (44) dépasse du véhicule. Le pylône (40) tourne sur sa première extrémité (42) selon un plan perpendiculaire à l'axe longitudinal (12) du véhicule. Un dispositif générateur de poussée (26) est monté sur la seconde extrémité (44) du pylône (40). Il tourne autour d'un axe de rotation s'inscrivant dans un plan perpendiculaire à l'axe longitudinal du pylône (40). Un dispositif moteur (32A, 32B) est couplé au dispositif générateur de poussée (26) pour lui délivrer la force motrice. Un système d'actionnement (74) permet de mettre en rotation le dispositif générateur de poussée (26) autour de l'axe de rotation. Un second système d'actionnement (60) assure la mise en rotation du pylône (40) autour de la première extrémité (42).
