ABSTRACT A ship's propulsion system has a propulsion propeller arranged beneath the ship's bottom that is preferably essentially flat or flat in the area of the propulsion system, and which can be retracted above the plane of the ship's bottom into a shaft. When the propeller is retracted into it, the shaft can be closed off within the plane of the ship's bottom by means of a plate, in the manner of a cover. It is preferred that the shaft can be closed off by means of the plate so as to be water tight, and that the water enclosed in the closed shaft can be pumped out, when the shaft that has been pumped empty is accessible through a manhole in the upper shaft cover so as to permit maintenance or repair work on the propeller. The manhole can, in its turn, be closed off by means of a cover. 14
