Propylene is converted to propylene oxide in a vapor phase oxidation process employing a silver catalyst supported on an alkaline earth metal carbonate and containing both a potassium salt such as potassium nitrate and a molybdenum promoter. The potassium salt and the molybdenum promoter may be simulatneously supplied by the use of a potassium salt of a molybdenum oxyanion. The efficiency of the process is greatly enhanced through the simultaneous inclusion of carbon dioxide and an organic halide in the feedstream. The feedstream need not contain a nitrogen oxide species such as NO to attain high propylene oxide selectivity.

On convertit du propylène en oxyde de propylène au cours d'un processus d'oxydation en phase vapeur faisant usage d'un catalyseur contenant de l'argent supporté par un carbonate de métal alcalino-terreux et contenant à la fois du sel de potassium tel que du nitrate de potassium et un promoteur au molybdène. On peut apporter le sel de potassium et le promoteur au molybdène simultanément en utilisant un sel de potassium d'un oxyanion de molybdène. L'efficacité de ce processus est grandement accrue par l'introduction simultanée de dioxyde de carbone et d'un halogénure organique dans le flux d'alimentation. Il n'est pas nécessaire, pour parvenir à une sélectivité élevée en oxyde de propylène, que le flux d'alimentation contienne une espèce d'oxyde d'azote tel que le monoxyde d'azote (NO).
