ABSTRACT A process is claimed for the preparation of trans- .DELTA.2-prostaglandin compounds of the formula:- Image wherein R1 represents alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms carrying a phenyl substituent or a cycloalkyl substituent of 5 to 7 carbon atoms, R2 represents hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R3 represents alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, R4 represents a 2-tetrahydropyranyl group unsubstituted or substituted by at least on alkyl group, or 2-tetrahydrofuranyl or 1-ethoxyethyl, X represents ethylene or trans-vinylene and Y represents ethylene or cis- vinylene, which are useful as intermediates for the preparation of inter alia new pharmacologically active trans-.DELTA.2,cis-.DELTA.5- prostaglandino of the formula:- Image where R1, R2 and X have the meanings mentioned above, [A] represents a PGF, PGE, or PGA ring, and R3', represents hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms.
