A prosthetic nucleus (30) replacement comprises a solid flattened oval disk. The top surface (32) of the disc is domed, and has a crest that is about three times higher than the crest on the domed bottom surface (34). Both top, and bottom surfaces are therefore convex. A peg (36) extends down from the middle of the bottom domed surface (34), and is used to pin the disc to the lower of two vertebrae it fits between. Metal markers are inserted into the peg (36), and an outside edge of the disc (22) so that radiographs can be used to determine the disc's in situ position. The prosthetic nucleus (30) replacement is surgically implanted into the hollowed out intervertebral space through a flap cut in the natural annulus fibrosis. The lower vertebrae (22) is prepared to receive the peg (36) by clearing the material covering the top of the bone matrix. Bone cement is used around the peg (36) to ensure a tight fit, and immobile attachment of the disc to the lower vertebrae (22).
L'invention concerne un noyau prothétique (30) de remplacement qui comprend un disque oval plein aplati. La surface supérieure (32) du disque est bombée et présente une crête presque trois fois plus haute que la crête située sur la surface inférieure bombée (34). Les surfaces supérieure et inférieure sont donc convexes. Une cheville (36) faisant saillie depuis le milieu de la surface inférieure bombée (34) est utilisée pour fixer le disque au vertèbre inférieur, entre deux vertèbres. Des repères métalliques sont insérés dans la cheville (36) et dans un bord extérieur du (22) disque, si bien que des radiographies peuvent être utilisées pour déterminer la position du disque in situ. Le noyau prothétique (30) de remplacement est implanté par chirurgie dans l'espace intervertébral évidé, à travers une fente à rabat ménagée dans l'anneau fibreux naturel du disque intervertébral. Le vertèbre inférieur (22) est préparé pour recevoir la cheville (36) par dégagement de la matière recouvrant la partie supérieure de la matrice osseuse. Du cément est disposé autour de la cheville (36) pour assurer un ajustement serré et une fixation immobile du disque sur le vertèbre inférieur (22).
