An optical WDM ring network includes at least two add/drop nodes connected in a ring path. The ring path comprises only a single optical fiber (1) arranged for bidirectional traffic between the nodes. A 2x2 switch (33) is used in one (B) of the add/drop nodes for switching signals forwarded from the node to the other node (B) to travel either on a first segment of the ring path or on a second, complementary segment of the ring path when required for protection purposes. Signals from the other node to the first node are issued to travel on both segments but the switch selects the actual segment from which the signals are received in the first node. The signals switches by the switch can be high priority signals used in protected channels communicated between the node and another node. On the segment from which the high priority signals are not received, low priority signals in non-protected channels can be communicated between the nodes, these channels also passing the switch.

L'invention concerne un réseau en anneau MRL optique qui comporte au moins deux noeuds ajout/retrait reliés en une voie en anneau. Ladite voie ne comprend qu'une fibre optique (1) conçue pour un trafic bidirectionnel entre les noeuds. Un commutateur 2x2 (33) est utilisé dans l'un (B) des noeuds ajout/retrait pour commuter les signaux transmis à partir d'un noeud vers l'autre noeud (B) pour voyager sur un premier segment de la voie en anneau ou sur un second segment, complémentaire de ladite voie, pour des besoins de protection, s'il y a lieu. Les signaux provenant de l'autre noeud en direction du premier noeud sont émis pour voyager sur les deux segments, mais le commutateur choisit le segment réel à partir duquel le premier noeud reçoit les signaux. Les signaux commutés par le commutateur peuvent être des signaux hautement prioritaires, utilisés dans des canaux protégés, communiqués entre ledit noeud et un autre noeud. Sur le segment à partir duquel les signaux hautement prioritaires ne sont pas reçus, les signaux non prioritaires dans des canaux non protégés peuvent être communiqués entre les noeuds, lesdits canaux passant également par le commutateur.
