This invention describes the identification of pre-messenger RNA processing as a novel target of environmental stress caused for example by lithium and sodium toxicity. Overexpression of different types of proteins (or protein fragments) from different organisms but all involved in pre-mRNA processing, protects yeast from salt stress, which indicates that any stimulation of this process, independently of its mechanism, may counteract the toxic effects of mineral salts. A similar phenotype of tolerance to NaCl and to LiCl has been observed by overexpression of these types of proteins in transgenic Arabidopsis plants, demonstrating the generality of this protective effect in eukaryotic cells and organisms.
L'invention concerne l'identification de la maturation de l'ARN pré-messager comme nouvelle cible d'écostress dû par exemple à la toxicité du lithium et du sodium. La surexpression de différents types de protéines (ou de fragments de protéines) provenant de différents organismes, qui interviennent néanmoins tous dans la maturation de l'ARN pré-messager, protège la levure du stress du sel, ce qui indique que toute stimulation de ce processus, indépendamment de son mécanisme, risque de neutraliser les effets de sels minéraux. Un phénotype similaire de tolérance au NaCl et au LiCi a été observé par surexpression de ces types de protéines dans des plantes d'arabidopsis transgéniques, ce qui indique la portée générale de cet effet protecteur dans des cellules et des organismes eucaryotes.
