The present invention relates to a device and method having particular application to protection of telecommunication installations against overvoltage and overcurrent. The method and device (preferably a circuit) utilize overvoltage suppressors, positive-temperature-coefficient (PTC) resistors, and voltage- limiting components. The object of the invention is to develop a method and a circuit for surge-current-resistant, reversible line protection. This is achieved by utilizing an overvoltage suppressor with a response voltage above the peak value of a power supply voltage, a thyristor diode with a voltage response slightly above the maximum operating voltage values of the line being protected, and a PTC resistor, connected between the overvoltage suppressor and the diode, that is used as a decoupling member to block the maximum amplitudes of the power supply voltage, obviating the need for a dedicated fail-safe device.
