A control system for a fuel gas burner appliance having a flame detector at the burner. An electrically operated fuel gas safety valve has its inlet connected to the source of fuel gas and a hose connected to the valve outlet and to the appliance gas inlet for the burner. An electronic controller receives signals from the flame detector and is operative to prevent the safety valve from opening when the flame detector detects the absence of flame.
