ABSTRACT Known metallurgical converters and other vessels have protective outlet rings formed from replaceable annular segments. Attempts to force-cool these protection rings have been unsuccessful because the cooling water pipes are vulner- able to damage. In this invention the segments are carried by attachment on the outer edge of a solid support ring indirectly secured to the vessel casing and the cooling pipes are secured on a tubular annular plate in a hollow space running around the vessel casing between the casing and the tubular annular plate, the tubular annular plate being secured to the solid support ring. With this arrangement the slag skulls which are formed are thinner than with previous arrange- ments and the cooling water pipes are protected from damage when slag is removed from the annular segments by application of mechanical forces.
