A B S T R A C T An expanded plastics material, such as polystyrene, which is normally highly flammable may be protected from fire by coating at least one surface thereof with an intumescent material comprising a carbonific which endothermically expands to form a carbon char when subjected to heat, a spumific which causes the char to expand, an activator which promotes decomposition, and a binder resin to hold the other components together. Structural bearing units may be protected from fire damage using the expanded polystyrene material as a filler, coated with the intumes- cent material.
