ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An installation is protected by a circular array of drag elements. Each drag element is anchored to the seabed and has teeth on its upper surface which penetrate, and decelerate, moving ice structures. Ice structures which move over the drag elements and enter the protection area have insufficient momentum to damage the installation. The apparatus of the invention is particularly useful for the protection drill ships moored in polar regions or coastal regions such as the Labrador coast.
