A protective cap for insertion over a gas nozzle incorporates a simple, hollow housing for manual application over the nozzle. The nozzle, of the usual laboratory type, has a tapered body with a series of ribs, the ribs each having a gradual or shallow leading taper and a sharper, reverse taper on the trailing surface. The cap includes an elastomeric O-ring located within a groove in the mouth of the housing, the O-ring projecting radially into the housing so as to engage the ribs of the nozzle, as the copies applied. Due to the differences of taper angle between leading and trailing faces of the ribs, the application of the cap requires less force than its removal. The O-ring can vary in its size, durometer and cross sectional shape, to suit a variety of users.
