ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A protective coating for articles, and particularly titanium, is disclosed. The coating material comprises a combi- nation of a metal halide and a fluorohydrocarbon amine. The surface of the article is preferably preliminarily cleaned by physical and/or chemical techniques, and is treated with a chemical conversion coating agent to provide an inert, microporous sur- face. The treated surface is then impregnated with the coating material to provide a low friction, protective surface.
