ABSTRACT A protective device is disclosed for a platform installed in the open sea. The device protects the platform against the impact of floating objects such as icebergs or ships. A protective body surrounds the platform to be protected and has a bottom with inclined bearing surfaces. This body is movably supported on large bearings having inclined bearing areas that engage slidingly the bearing surfaces. A foundation supports the bearings which preferably are mounted for rotation on the foundation. When the device is struck by a floating object the kinetic energy of the impact pushes the protective body upwards on a portion of the inclined bearing areas and is transformed into potential energy of the elevated body. The protective body is able to slide back to its initial position after impact using its received potential energy to thrust away the floating object from the endangered platform.
