The present invention relates to a protective cover for beds to prevent wetting and soiling of the linen and mattress including a continuous moisture impermeable barrier layer, an absorbent layer bonded to the barrier layer and integral marginal flaps for securing the cover under the mattress. A fabric substrate is provided to add mechanical strength to the protective cover. A covering fabric is quilted to the absorbent layer to provide a pattern which traps fluid and inhibits flow. The protective cover of the present invention provides a better protective barrier resisting wicking to the linens and mattress below. The invention also provides a stronger construction, without stitching perforations,which can be used to assist in moving or lifting patients.
