A protective covering for a horse's hoof (24) is provided which comprises a horseshoe (16) having convex (4) and concave edges (2) and a polymeric fiber fabric (18) embedded in a polymeric resin (22) bonded to the horseshoe. The fabric (18) extends beyond the convex edge (4) of the horseshoe (16). When the shoe is fitted to the horse's hoof (24), the fabric (18) extends up over the outside of the hoof (24). The protective covering is secured to the hoof (24) using an acrylic structural adhesive both between the hoof (24) and the shoe (16), and between the polymeric fiber fabric (18) and the outside of die hoof (24). The polymeric fiber fabric (18) is preferably a polyolefin, and particularly preferred is woven polyethylene. The polymeric resin (22) is preferably polyurethane.
