ABSTRACT Protective headgear, such as a helmet, is provided with a protective respiratory hood. When not in use the hood is housed in a sealed space on a projecting edge or brim of the helmet. It is connected to a supply of respiratory gas. When this is opened the respiratory gas passes into double- walled sections of the protective respiratory hood and inflates it so that it drops out of its folds or rolls, over the head of the wearer. The respiratory gas passes into the inside of the hood and is available for breathing.
