ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A protective helmet comprising, a shell, and a flexible liner positioned in the shell to dissipate forces applied against the helmet, with the liner having a plurality of hollow radially extending spoke members and a lower rim defining a fluid filled chamber extending throughout a substantial part of the shell. The liner has a lower rear portion spaced above a lower rear edge of the shell, and an inner surface for contacting the wearer's head. The helmet has an elongated resilient rear pad removably secured to the inside of a lower rear portion of the shell, said rear pad extending peripherally around the lower rear portion of the shell and below the lower rear edge of the shell.
