A protective pad, which is wearable over a knee-covering or elbow-covering portion of a protective garment for a firefighter or for an emergency worker, comprises an outer, puncture-resistant layer, an intermediate, insulative layer, and an inner layer. Each of the outer and inner layers has a length and a width. The outer and inner layers are attached to one another along two outer seams extending lengthwise and along two outer seams extending widthwise so that the apparent length of the inner layer, as measured along an imaginary line bisecting the inner layer, is shorter than the apparent length of the outer layer, as measured similarly, and so that the apparent width of the inner layer, as measured along an imaginary line bisecting the inner layer, is shorter than the apparent width of the outer layer, as measured similarly. Preferably, the outer layer comprises a series of pieces, each of which pieces is folded along a fold extending widthwise and is tucked under itself so as to define a loop, and which pieces are attached one after another along a series of seams extending widthwise.
