A protective knit material for use in a protective garment and comprised of a grid of filament yarns forming a plurality of rows of aligned loops interconnected by connecting yarns. A high tenacity thread, having a minimum diameter of about 0.050 inch, is retained loosely inside each of the rows of aligned loops and in closely spaced side-by- side relationship. When the protective knit material is engaged by a grasping-cutting implement, such as a saw chain or saw blade, some of the high tenacity threads will be pulled and cut from the grid and entangled with the cutting teeth of the implement to absorb energy in the implement to provide protection to a wearer of the garment.
