ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention disclosed is a protective coating and a method applying the same to protect paper substrates such as maps and newspaper clippings from harsh environmental conditions such as rain, grease and rough handling. Two different film forming latexes are applied in a specific order to a substrate at room temperature. The first film is a latex which has the following properties; water resistance, resistance to discoloration, flexibility, transparency, resistance to degradation over time, a glass transition temperature of less than thirty degrees celsius. The second film is a latex which has the following properties; resistance to discoloration, transparency, resistance to film degradation over time, resistance to stickiness, a glass transition temperature of greater than 10 degrees celsius. The resulting coating is a flexible, waterproof, transparent coating that tends to strengthen the substrate, protect it from water, grease, rough handling and will not yellow or degrade over time and results in a substrate which will not bond to itself when it is folded and subjected to temperatures that reach up to seventy degrees celsius. In addition, the adding of a W absorber to one or both latexes helps in protecting ultra violet sensitive substrates such as newspaper from discoloration.
