A protector for the head, face and/or eyes, for example a welder~s helmet, carries at least one gas sensor (11) in a position where the sensor (11) can detect one or more properties of the atmosphere to be inhaled by a person wearing the protector. The gas sensor is operatively associated with at least one data conversion, data transmission and/or data memory device also carried by the protector.
