Peptide-based compounds containing four invanant cysteine residues which havc been optionally oxidized to contain two intramolecular disulfide bonds, or modified forms where the cysteines are replaced, are useful as preservatives and in preventing, treating or ameliorating viral or microbial infection in animals and plants, and in inactivating endotoxin. Exemplary peptides include the following in purified and isolated form: RGGRLCYCRRRFCVCVGR, RGGRLCYCRRRFCICV, RGGGLCYCRRRFCVCVGR, snd RGGRLCYCRGWICFCVGR.

L'invention concerne des composés à base de peptides contenant quatre restes de cystéines invariantes ayant été éventuellement oxydés de sorte qu'ils contiennent deux liaisons bisulfure intramoléculaires, ou des formes modifiées dans lesquelles les cystéines sont remplacées. Lesdits composés sont utilisés en tant que conservateurs et pour le traitement, la prévention ou l'amélioration des infections virales ou bactériennes chez les animaux ou dans les plantes, ainsi que pour l'inactivation de l'endotoxine. Les peptides selon l'invention sont entre autres, les suivants sous forme purifiée et isolée: RGGRLCYCRRRFCVCVGR, RGGRLCYCRRRFCICV, RGGGLCYCRRRFCVCVGR et RGGRLCYCRGWICFCVGR.
