A protein adhesive is provided for use as an adhesive binder in a paper coating composition. The protein adhesive contains a protein material, a divalent dispersing agent, preferably an alkaline earth oxide or alkaline earth hydroxide, and a cation binding agent. The protein material is effective for use as an adhesive binder. The dispersing agent is combined with the protein material in an amount effective to adjust the pH of an aqueous solution of the protein material sufficiently to substantially solubilize the protein material. The cation binding agent is combined with the protein material and the dispersing agent in an amount effective to inhibit cation induced protein gel formation in an aqueous solution containing the protein adhesive. A process for forming a protein adhesive for a paper coating composition using a divalent dispersing agent, preferably an alkaline earth oxide or alkaline earth hydroxide, is also provided.
Adhésif protéinique utile comme liant adhésif dans une composition de revêtement de papier. L'adhésif protéinique renferme une matière protéinique, un agent de dispersion divalent, de préférence un oxyde ou un hydroxyde de métal alcalino-terreux, et un agent de liaison cationique. La matière protéinique est efficace comme liant adhésif. L'agent de dispersion est combiné avec la matière protéinique dans des proportions permettant de solubiliser de façon substantielle la matière protéinique. L'agent de liaison cationique est combiné avec la matière protéinique et l'agent dispersant dans des proportions permettant l'inhibition de la formation de gel protéinique par induction cationique, dans une solution aqueuse renfermant l'adhésif protéinique. L'invention présente également une méthode de préparation d'adhésif protéinique pour composition de revêtement de papier, utilisant un agent de dispersion divalent, de préférence un oxyde ou un hydroxyde de métal alcalino-terreux.
