The invention relates to a novel protein product of the NET1 locus. The novel protein has transforming activity in the NIH3T3 focus-forming assay and is suitable as a point of attack for influencing carcinogenesis and treating cancer by therapy, as well as for influencing apoptosis. The cloned DNA also provides a possibility for diagnosing cancer since transcripts of the transforming protein can be detected in patient samples.
