A protocol independent multiplexer is described that allows for multiple different protocols that operate at different bit rates to be combined and output in a format that may have yet another bit rate. The multiplexer includes a series of inputting devices that are each coupled to a respective buffering device, a mapping device coupled to each of the buffering devices, and an outputting device coupled to the mapping device. Each of the inputting devices receive an input optical signal and forwards recovered data information to the corresponding buffering device. The buffering devices store the data information and output to the mapping device, the outputting being controlled by the mapping device to ensure that the buffering devices remain approximately half full. The mapping device formats the data information into individual data units and outputs the data units to the outputting device which subsequently multiplexes the data units. One key advantage of this protocol independent multiplexer is that only one piece of hardware is required for the operation of numerous different protocols.
L'invention décrite dans le présent document porte sur un dispositif multiplexeur a débit binaire réduit indépendant du protocole permettant d'utiliser divers protocoles distincts fonctionnant à des débits différents dont on peut combiner la sortie sous la forme d'un extrant pouvant avoir un débit complètement différent des éléments précédents. Le multiplexeur comprend une série d'organes d'entrée qui sont individuellement couplés à un dispositif tampon correspondant, un dispositif de mise en correspondance couplé à chaque tampon et un organe de sortie couplé au dispositif de mise en correspondance. Chacun des organes d'entrée reçoit un signal optique d'entrée et transmet l'information récupérée au dispositif tampon correspondant. Les dispositifs tampon stockent l'information et émettent celle-ci au dispositif de mise en correspondance pour veiller à ce que le tampon ne soit qu'environ à moitié plein. Le dispositif de mise en correspondance formate l'information sous forme de données individuelles et émet ces dernières à l'organe de sortie qui les réémet en multiplex. L'un des .avantages clés de ce multiplexeur indépendant du protocole est qu'il ne faut qu'un seul élément matériel pour exécuter une vaste gamme de protocoles différents.
